Work towards a positive relationship with food, movement, your body and self. Return to the joyful experience of eating and feel better, more present, more connected and more free to live life to the fullest.

How it works

Sessions are usually held weekly, fortnightly or monthly at our Tweed Heads Clinic in person, or via Zoom. We’ll spend the first few sessions really getting to understand your history and current relationship to food, your body, movement and self, unpacking your unique life experiences and discussing how you best feel supported.

From there, we enter the exciting world of nutrition and Intuitive Eating, working through and exploring each of the 10 principles of Intuitive Eating and how they apply to your own life.

There is no set timeframe or rubric for your Intuitive Eating journey, but we do always start at the first principle (Rejecting the Diet Mentality) and end on the final principle (Honouring Your Health with Gentle Nutrition). Between those, we move through principles in no set chronological order, but rather follow the ‘intuitive’ path, moving onto the next principle that holds the most relevance to you at the time (often decided collaboratively between you and your Dietitian).

Sometimes we unpack an entire principle in a single session, other times we continue to explore it over several—it all depends on your unique circumstance. But remember, your Intuitive Eating journey might start now, but it’s not something that just happens overnight; it’s a life-long thing! It will take time to reconnect to your body and build habits that become your trusted toolkit for a sustainable healthy (and enjoyable) relationship with food, your body and your self.

  • Improved body image, self-esteem and self-worth
  • Reconnection to the joy and satisfaction of eating
  • Ability to read your body’s hormonal cues of hunger and fullness
  • Improved mental capacity to think about the important things in life (not just food all the time!)
  • Understand the drivers of your emotional eating experiences and build ways to best support yourself
  • Balance – because eating feels good and it’s what your body signals it wants – not because you ‘have to’

I have a health condition – can I still see you?

Of course! We can help you manage health concerns through the principles of Intuitive Eating. We can assist with:

  • Eating Disorders (see our dedicated service below)
  • Disordered Eating
  • Women’s Health Concerns (Amenorrhea, PCOS, Endometriosis, Fertility)
  • Childhood nutrition & child feeding difficulties
  • Chronic Diseases (Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Cholesterol)
  • Gastrointestinal issues (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Coeliac Disease, Irritable Bowel Disease)
  • Mental Health
  • General Health concerns

Our approach to nutrition education & counselling is deeply rooted in the philosophies of Health at Every Size (HAES). Combining the approaches of Intuitive Eating, Weight-Inclusive Medical Nutrition Therapy and Body Respect, we understand that it is healthful behaviours, not weight, that contributes to our overall health and wellbeing. We take pride in being inclusive of human diversity in terms of body size, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identification and social status.

We take a holistic, individualised approach to Eating Disorder recovery and treatment. We honour that each of our beautiful clients have specific needs, life experiences and circumstances that result in a unique pathway to recovery and sustainable health.

How we work

Eating Disorder (ED) Recovery can look very different to the Intuitive Eating journey for someone who is struggling with disordered eating tendencies. While disordered eating recovery through the journey of Intuitive Eating can be self-guided, or in collaboration with just your Certified Intuitive Eating Counsellor/Dietitian, ED recovery requires a multidisciplinary team to truly give you the best care and support you’ll need for a full and sustained recovery.

If you have been diagnosed with an Eating Disorder, you’ll likely have an Eating Disorder Plan (EDP) from your GP. Our dietitians are accredited and experienced in providing ED recovery support as part of EDP teams (alongside your GP and Psychologist at a minimum).

Our practitioners are trained in Motivational Interviewing, Family-Based Therapy (Maudsley method) and integrating nutrition counselling skills to assist you in your recovery. Our Dietitians engage in ongoing clinical supervision to ensure you are provided with the safest, most ethical care and support.

If you suspect you have an Eating Disorder, but have not been able to access appropriate support, we can help advocate on your behalf and assist you in forming a treatment team in a setting most suitable to you.

I have an ED, can I still receive Intuitive Eating Coaching?

Of course! But like any journey, you’ll want to start out on the right foot. So in some cases, we recommend focusing on your ED recovery before we set out on exploring the principles of Intuitive Eating. Discussing your personal goals are always part of your initial consultation, so if Intuitive Eating is something you’d like to work towards, do let us know.

What to expect

We recommend starting with weekly support sessions, and from there spacing out your appointments appropriate to your unique recovery journey.

As an early (but essential) priority, we’ll work together on reconnecting you to your body’s appetite cues through regular and adequate nutrition. Often at the beginning of ED recovery, we won’t be able to rely on your fullness signals, as your body will feel prematurely full due to a slower digestion rate. We’ll work to re-adjust those fullness cues to a healthy norm, providing you with support and guidance along the way.

Early on, weight restoration may also be part of your EDP. To help your body (and mind) on the road to recovery, we want to nourish it with adequate energy sources that will help to build healthy tissue and reinforce all the new neural pathways you’ll be forging on your recovery journey. Our aim is to help you return to a weight that is within your body’s natural range, so you can overcome pre-occupation with food, weight and hunger in the most optimal and supported way.

And most importantly, throughout your time with us, we’ll work with you to create a way of eating that feels safe.

EDP Rebates

Your EDP will entitle you to 20 rebated sessions (per year) with an accredited Dietitian through the Australian Medicare Benefit Scheme. You’ll receive a rebate of $54.60 on each of the 20 consultations, available from the date your EDP commences.
